England vs India ODI series review : Amidst runs, retirement rumours and records, another opportunity lost.

As if the T20 series loss was not enough, India managed to successfully bottle yet another ODI series as they went down to England 2-1 even though they were 1-0 up. The ODI series not only was lost, but has sparked rumors of retirement of Rohit Sharma. Even though he hasn't officially announced it, the rumours are still going strong.

Captain Shubman Gill called for an improvement in fitness within the squad after a spate of injuries hampered the visitors during their 2-1 ODI series defeat to England. Gill expressed his frustration at players not being able to last a 3-match series, admitting that it disrupted India's balance through the course of the series.

Jasprit Bumrah, who played the first two games missed out the decider due to a knee injury and that had an impact on the bowling as they leaked 387 runs in 50 overs on a Lords pitch that was good for bowling. India, who were in the chase in the third game and a decent position in the second game choked at the wrong time and gave the hosts a crack at the series, which they eventually won. 

England on the other hand were ruthless. After a slip up in the first game, they decided not to let loose and the result was there for everyone to see.India still don't have an answer to Joe Root. They tried posting a gully to cut off his easy singles, but Root simply found other pockets of the field. In this decider, they held him relatively quiet through the middle overs, only for him to unveil a more expansive range late in the innings and power England to what eventually proved a match-winning total. Root's unbeaten half-century extended a remarkable run of consistency, with scores in his last six ODI innings now reading 61, 75, 111*, 76*, 99* and 74* (latest). It was little surprise then that he was named the player of the series. 

The Gill - Gambhir era has not got off to a good start and the build up to the world cup is just about a year away and Hardik Pandya’s absence has been a glaring void that needs to be filled soon if the duo needs to taste glory in South Africa.
