Manav Suthar, Gurnoor Brar among new entrants as India resume their home season.

After shining brightly in the domestic season earlier this year, Saurashtra left arm spinner Manav Suthar and fast bowler Gurnoor Brar have earned their maiden India call ups as BCCI announced the squad for the test and Ofi series against Afghanistan that will be played in June.

A handy left-handed batter lower down the order, with 1026 first-class runs at an average of 25.65, Harsh Dubey has also got the nod ahead of Axar Patel who was left out of the squad from India's last Test assignment against South Africa at home.

"With the Test team, we can see there is a lot of transition happening at this point. We are looking at options. A couple of players have moved away from Test cricket... We want guys who can contribute with the bat down the order but also have the necessary skill to be a front-line spin or a front-line seam bowler. We think he certainly fits the bill. We are hopeful that when he gets that opportunity, he shows what he can do. We have seen enough over the last couple of years, maybe a little bit more. He seems to have the necessary skill to succeed at this level, chief selector Ajit Agarkar was quoted saying.

The one-off Test will see Prasidh Krishna return after he missed the home series against West Indies and South Africa late last year. He last played red-ball cricket at The Oval during India's five-match tour of England in 2025. Mohd. Siraj retains his spot. Aquib Nabi Dar, who was outstanding in the Ranji Trophy still hasn’t found his India calling yet.

As far as the ODI squad was concerned, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who played an ODI in January also return to the squad as the dress rehearsal for the ODI world cup in 2027 begins. Apart from Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna, Prince Yadav  and Gurnoor will  also be part of the pace attack for the 50-over matches. Prince bagged 18 wickets in eight matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, at an average of 19.27, finishing as his team's highest wicket-taker and the fifth highest wicket-taker overall in the season. Punjab pacer Gurnoor picked up 11 wickets in eight matches in the same tournament.

While India have their ODI set up sorted, the test team is going through the transition phase and would look to get back to winning ways as the last test series they played ended in a humiliating 2-0 defeat against defending test champions South Africa. Shubman Gill, who picked up an unfortunate injury against South Africa is expected to lead India in both formats with KL Rahul being appointed his deputy.
