In a rather surprising turn of events, Shubman Gill, India’s current test captain has been handed over the limited overs captaincy for the upcoming tour of Australia. The announcement was made keeping in mind that the dashing opener will sooner than later be captain of all three formats as Gautam Gambhir prepare accordingly for the upcoming ODI World cup in South Africa in 2 years time.
Gill’s appointment might as well signal the end of the road for Rohit Sharma, under whom India were runners up in the 2023 World Cup and winners of the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy in February. Both Rohit and Virat Kohli, who will play for India after a rather long hiatus of 7 months, are non committal about playing the World cup.
Meanwhile Gill, 26, is relatively inexperienced in captaincy in the 50-over format having led only six times in List-A cricket with a 5:1 win-loss ratio. Having been named Test captain earlier this year, Gill began with a 2-2 series draw against England and just registered a thumping win in his sixth Test in charge against the West Indies by an innings and 140 runs. He has 8 odi 100s and now has been handed one of the most prestigious but most vulnerable posts in Indian cricket.
Shreyas Iyer who was unlucky to miss the bus in the recently concluded Asia cup has been named vice captain for the Odi series and with KL Rahul, Axar Patel, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Kumar Reddy all being included, the Indian squad has undergone a major revamp as they take on a formidable Australian side in their own den.
From the Champions Trophy 2025 squad, Ravindra Jadeja has not been included in the squad while Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant are nursing their injuries. Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the ODI games. Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, along with Kuldeep Yadav form the bowling line up.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also announced the squad for the five-match T20I series which follows the ODIs which are on similar lines to the recently concluded Asia Cup. Surya Kumar Yadav will lead the side while Jasprit Bumrah is a part of the T20 squad as India prepare to defend their title in February at home.
