Despite trying various permutations and combinations, the Gambhir- Surya Kumar Yadav led Indian team managed to come up trumps as they wrapped up yet another T20 series win against the Aussie side.
After a washout in Canberra and a thrashing at the G, India were once again put on the backfoot as they entered Canberra with all the outside noise growing. But the bowlers led by Arshdeep Singh and the batting led by Washington Sundar made an absolute mockery of a stiff target of 188.
Sundar, who was played ahead of Kuldeep, proved his worth in gold when he scored a blistering 49 of just 23 balls as he took a particular liking to Xavier Bartlett as he took him for 22 runs in an over and paid off Gambhir’s faith in selecting him. He was assisted by the captain himself, Abhishek Sharma at the top and terrific cameos from Jitesh Sharma and Tilak Verma.
And then Shubman Gill. The Indian test and Odi captain who has been the victim of relentless trolling answered his critics in style in the first and last game, but unfortunately, rain had the final say in both those games. The balance of the team might be somewhat affected as Sanju Samson had to sit out, but Gill’s form has been the biggest positive for team India in what had been a tough couple of months for him outside the field.
And finally to the captain coach combination. As there are still 10 games to go before the world cup in February, the team looks to be in the right shape and frame of mind and seem to be relishing the team atmosphere. With Hardik Pandya set to return to the squad for the South Africa series, the selectors will have a happy headache as to how many all rounders to pick.
The only concern remains about Jasprit Bumrah’s recent form, but naysayers should write him off at their own risk as we all know how he was instrumental in orchestrating that win in Barbados last year.
Gambhir too said in the post series press conference that the team is far from ready for the world cup and even with 10 T20’s to go, a lot of work is needed in all departments. He also stressed on the fact that although the opening is sorted, there will be constant changes in the middle order.
“We're still not where we want to be in three months down the line. Because the bigger picture is not the series, but the World Cup as well. So hopefully, by the time the World Cup comes, I think we are in that space where we want to be before the World Cup. Obviously, two openers are permanent. Rest, I think everything shuffles because it's not the amount of runs that matter in T20 cricket. It's the impact that matters. “ Gambhir was quoted saying.
