Jacob Duffy, New Zealand’s new kid on the block earned his maiden T20 call up as they announced their squad for the up late ICC mens T20 World Cup in India that kicks off on the 7th of February .Alongside Duffy, the pace attack consists of Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Adam Milne while James Neesham can roll his arm over. Santner is joined by Ish Sodhi, who played the same tournament in India a decade ago, as the major frontline spinners.
Although the Kiwis are always a force to reckon with, this particular side seems a bit short on experience. Apart from regulars like Santner, Conway and Daryl Mitchell, the rest seem to be a hit and miss and although they have IPL experience, it is highly unlikely that this kiwi team will go all the way.
“World Cups are special and there's few better places to play one than in India, which is very much the heartbeat of the modern game. I'm really happy with the skills and experience of this squad and I think we have a group which can make New Zealand proud," said head coach Rob Walter.
Kyle Jamieson, the tall lanky fast bowler is unlikely to play a big part in the world cup as Matt Henry and Lockie Freguson will form the bowling attack with Duffy being the third bowler and Sodhi and Santner being the spinners. The Kiwis will be keen to add another ICC trophy to their cabinet and prove, that nice guys always do not finish last.
New Zealand have been named in Group D alongside Afghanistan, Canada, South Africa and UAE. They will begin their tournament against Afghanistan in Chennai on February 8, before playing UAE two days later at the same venue. The big clash against South Africa is on February 14 in Ahmedabad before they round up their group stage against Canada back in Chennai on February 17.
